Juneteenth was already a lesson in delay before it became a holiday — freedom declared in January of 1863, not delivered until June of 1865. Nearly two and a half years late. And we've been calling that liberation ever since. I took three of the most quoted phrases in Black American history — *I have a dream. By any means necessary. Yes we can.* — and did the one thing we're trained not to do with them. I asked whether any of it actually got finished. This isn't an argument against celebrating.
